Abe Lincoln’s 200th Birthday

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

On February 12, 1809, President Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky. 200 years is an awesome milestone.

How are we celebrating?
Our city, which is named after him, is holding a celebration, which started yesterday and will go on until Sunday. There are photo exhibits, lectures, PBS specials, music, theater, and other stuff.
Springfield, Illinois is [...]

A Few Nagging Questions

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

When will Matt finish the 2008 Advent Calendar?
Is the creator of this game, 6 Differences, from Lincoln? It includes the Nebraska state capitol building, the lesser-known abandoned Kmart on 56th and Highway 2 that has had a “For Lease” banner on it since 2003, and other locations that feel eerily familiar.
I thought Lux died years [...]

MercyMe: Finally Home. A dedication to our soldiers

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

I was just on my way home from a midwife appt. (We are in the end stretch of this pregnancy, so I’m having weekly appointments now. One little side note, apparently I have very impressive hemoglobin. That’s the first time I’ve even gotten that compliment!)
Anyway, on the way home a song came on the radio [...]

So Long, Circuit City. Don’t Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out.

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

You’ve probably already heard it by now: Circuit City (in the U.S.) is going out of business.
They could probably blame the failing economy because lots of people just don’t have the disposable income to spend on home electronics and car stereos. They also have made bad business decisions in the last year or two. But [...]

Gaming on a Budget, Part 3: Used Merchandise

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Read Part 1 and Part 2.
Buyer Beware
Purchasing pre-owned games, consoles, and peripherals is a double-edged sword. On one hand, you are able to get out-of-production goods and popular newer titles for a lot less than if you were to buy them new. On the other hand, those same treasures were at the hands of who [...]

Gaming on a Budget, Part 2: Buying New

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Welcome to the second part of a guide to getting the most out of your hard-earned gaming dollar. Yesterday, I gave my history of gaming as an example of frugality and its benefits. Today, let’s talk about purchasing brand new unopened games.
Personally, I don’t like paying more than $20 for a game. Lots of time [...]

Gaming on a Budget, Part 1: A Personal History

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

Welcome to a short series about being a cheap frugal gamer. This first part is a short history of my experiences with video game consoles.
Old as Dirt

I’ve been playing video games since my parents brought home a Pong-like console they purchased at a garage sale. It had probably a dozen monochromatic games on it and [...]

I Still Miss Freddie

Monday, January 12th, 2009

A while ago, I slapped together some quickly worded appreciation of Freddie Mercury and Queen. They’re back in the front of my mind now in a time when I need to write.
Yesterday, working in the basement, I wanted to listen to some music, so I grabbed my Live Aid DVD set for background noise. Then [...]

A Few Nagging Thoughts on Elton John

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

I don’t really understand Elton John. I can sort of understand his appeal, because there are quite a few of his songs I really enjoy. I love “Rocket Man”, “Daniel”, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, “Tiny Dancer” to name a few. But I just don’t get him; I never really have.
He’s far from consistent. In 2007, [...]

5 Great Qualities to Look for in a Church

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Yesterday, as I sat in church, I thought over my family’s 2008 church experiences. In the beginning of the year, Marc and I were having a difficult time in the church we’d been a part of for 4 1/2 years. In April, we finally got the courage to discuss our concerns with church leadership. When [...]
