Abe Lincoln’s 200th Birthday

By Marc | February 12, 2009

MarcOn February 12, 1809, President Abraham Lincoln was born in Hardin County, Kentucky. 200 years is an awesome milestone.

How are we celebrating?

Our city, which is named after him, is holding a celebration, which started yesterday and will go on until Sunday. There are photo exhibits, lectures, PBS specials, music, theater, and other stuff.

Springfield, Illinois is holding festivities also, but they have much more to offer, since they have the historic locations and even his tomb. Lucky Springfield.

The state of Indiana even gets in on it, since that’s where he grew up.

The government has sites for the Lincoln Bicentennial, but the servers are all busy at the time of this writing.

During his presidency, he fought and won the battle against slavery, making no person possession of another. It seems fitting that this year, 2009, would see our country’s first black president. Our country has come far.

I saw a Newsweek cover from November with a picture of Barack Obama having Abraham Lincoln as his shadow. There certainly has been a lot of conjuring up the spirits of great leaders for this presidency, and Lincoln has been one of the most obvious.

In fact, this country owes a lot to Mr. Lincoln, mostly for how he dealt with the issue of slavery and a split country. “Historians” and conspiracy theorists have and will continue to mar his image, but Abraham Lincoln will always be one of the greatest of Americans.

So, how does Google, company founded by Stanford college students, choose to celebrate? They forget him and draw attention to Charles Darwin (he wrote a book or something) on their homepage (see more of their special logos here).
