MercyMe: Finally Home. A dedication to our soldiers
By Julie | January 28, 2009
I was just on my way home from a midwife appt. (We are in the end stretch of this pregnancy, so I’m having weekly appointments now. One little side note, apparently I have very impressive hemoglobin. That’s the first time I’ve even gotten that compliment!)
Anyway, on the way home a song came on the radio that I love. I didn’t know who it was by. But as I sang along I wondered if it was by a new group or someone I had never heard of. As it ended it the DJ announced it was a song called “Finally Home” by MercyMe. I was shocked. I’ve been a MercyMe fan for years, ever since “I Can Only Imagine“. Many of their songs are some of my favorites: Homesick, So Long Self, You Reign, Word of God Speak, Hold Fast, Bring the Rain. Usually I recognize their music the first time I hear it. I know their sound so I know, even when I hear a new song, that it belongs to them. But this song sounds different, the instruments are a little different, and the lead singer is singing differently, in a little different range than I’m used to. I didn’t realize it was them.
When I got home I checked my email. I had received one from Godtube.com. The title inside said “A MercyMe Video Exclusive – See it Here First.” So I clicked on it and the video to the song I’d just heard on the radio started playing. The song is about when we finally come home, to heaven, and see our heavenly Father. But the video has footage of the soldiers leaving their families to defend our country. And surprisingly, the lyrics fit the scenes.
I know this country is very divided about if we should be fighting this war. Some call it “Bush’s War” others say we should be there because of 9/11. There have been many arguments. But most people I’ve read and talked to are very supportive of the people who have put their lives on hold, and on the line, to fight for us. I find their sacrifice very touching; I don’t have the strength to make the same decision. Or the perseverance to be away from my husband and children, as a soldier’s life would require. I was impressed with MercyMe for dedicating a video to our soldiers’ sacrifices. It makes me feel fortunate. Fortunate to be able fix supper every night, knowing my husband will be home to enjoy it with us. Fortunate to tuck my kids in and read them a story every night. Fortunate for the men and women who have risked their very lives to defend and protect our way of life. And fortunate for the reminder to pray for the soldiers and their families during their sacrifices.
Here’s the video. I hope you enjoy it…
