Farewell, George W. Bush. Welcome, Barack Obama.
By Julie | January 20, 2009
A person would have to be pretty cut off from society to not know today is inauguration day. Two days ago I pored over Sunday’s paper, page after page was stacked full of pictures and articles about Obama. Some are excited and hopeful about the potential he’ll bring to this country, others are afraid, and some simply like the way his wife, Michelle, dresses, carries herself and as one women said is an “every women” for us all. Personally, I tend to get a little annoyed when we take a serious profession and turn it into a fashion show. So sorry, but I couldn’t finish the Michelle as a super model articles.
In all the articles and pictures I don’t recall one dedicated to President Bush. I guess it’s in with the new and silently forget about the old, in this case, president.
Bush’s approval rating has definitely not been very high. Many would say he’s not their favorite president. And I can’t recall the last time I’ve heard a single good thing from the media about Bush, unless, it was a comedian thanking him for providing such good material to make fun of. Meanwhile, American media hails Obama as a messiah (something that really bugs me because we already have a savior) with such a strong bias that I sometimes wonder who won on election night: was it Obama, or ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and all the others?
I’m not trying to redeem Bush, or hail Obama. But I believe we should show respect for our leaders, even if they weren’t the person we chose (something the press has failed to do.)
I want to thank you, George W. Bush, for giving us 8 years of leadership. Your term certainly faced huge adversities to overcome: 9-11, Iraq, Katrina, the nations highest gas prices ever, the banking crisis, the economic crisis, a terrible recession. Thank you for trying to handle them all. Thank you for keeping our country safe after 9-11. Thank you for accepting the press’ criticism well.
Thank you, Barack Obama, for pledging the next 4 years to us. There are many problems facing our country for you to overcome. How will the economy be fixed? Gently, I hope, so as to not make it worse. I hope you bring the unity to us you campaigned about, but I hope you understand that people are not willing to just give their deeply held beliefs up to make that happen. Many people are praying for you; I hope their prayers will uplift you, and give you guidance when the current unknowns come your way. I pray your administration will give us a better tomorrow for all of our children. Welcome, God Bless, and good luck.
