‘Twas the Very First Christmas: The Night Before Christmas Parody
By Julie | December 25, 2008
Merry Christmas. For today, we wanted to share one of the many things we’ve been working on lately. This is a poem I wrote for Christmas. It should, if I did it correctly, mimic the style and pace of the Christmas classic “The Night before Christmas.” Marc was good enough to do some wonderful illustrations to accompany it (I’m pretty proud of them). We hope you enjoy it.
Where ever you are, how ever are spending this holiday, we wish you a very Merry Christmas!

‘Twas the very first Christmas,
When they wished to sleep in a house.
But, they stayed in a stable,
full of livestock and a mouse.
Joseph longed to give Mary a mansion,
with much better care.
For the son he would call his own,
would soon be there.
The Christ baby lay in straw for a bed,
While visions of a happiness danced in his parents heads.
But Jesus’ life would be full of clatter,
for He would erase sin, a serious matter.

Now 2000 years later as Christmas appears,
We replace Jesus with a fat man and reindeer.
We dash to stores, to get the best deals, quick
Leaving children in long lines to meet jolly St. Nick.
Too busy to remember all He did when he came,
We rattle off wish lists, stating brand names:
Now iPod, Now Wii
Now iPhone, Now Dell,
To Target, To Macy’s,
To buy something on sale,
Cut fast through the traffic,
Rush straight to the mall,
Now Give me, Give me, Give me it all!
So who cares if I hear on the roof,
Prancing or pawing or even one reindeers hoof?

In our Christmas traditions we’ve turned it around,
Forgetting a sinless baby allowed himself to be bound.
For the sins of our minds, hands and even our foot,
but Jesus’ sacrifice removed our tarnish and soot.
He died for our sins and arose from below
Showing his Father we’d been washed white as snow.
And He threw them open, the pearly gates,
For Jesus’ sacrifice changed humanities fate.
So as you fill up credit cards with gifts galore,
I hope you remember Christmas means so much more
Then the presents you place beneath the tree,
You see, Christmas is all about his love for you and me!
So, let’s quiet ourselves, turn a listening ear,
to the blessed words I hope that we’ll hear
In an echo he’ll exclaim, with no image in sight,
“I love you all, turn to me now, I’ll be your light.”
