Dutchman Builds His Own Noah’s Ark

By Julie | October 16, 2008

JulieSorry, your regularly schedule comic will not be seen today. We’re getting ready to go out of town for Marc’s grandmother’s funeral. It’s been a busy, somewhat sad and stressful week. Marc has been working on the comic, but it isn’t finished. He is planning on posting it tomorrow (Friday) morning. In the meantime we stumbled across something fun we thought you may like. The following is from an email:

Dutchman Builds His Own Noah’s Ark

Where would you like to go on your next vacation? Do I hear Disney World (I’m with you there!) New York? Europe? Oh, you’d just like to take a good nap (sign me up, I’ll go to). How about a Holland? Why? To see Noah’s ark.

Ok, so it’s not the original ark, just a tiny little replica. Except it’s not very tiny. I received an email recently about a man who built Noah’s Ark. At first I thought it was a joke. Then I did a little research a found several news stories on it. Here is a synopsis from the BBC:

A half-sized replica of the biblical Noah’s Ark has been built by a Dutch man, complete with model animals.

Dutch creationist Johan Huibers built the ark as testament to his literal belief in the Bible.

The ark, in the town of Schagen, is 150 cubits long – half the length of Noah’s – and three storeys high. A cubit was about 45cm (18in) long.

The ark opened its doors on Saturday, after almost two years’ construction, most of it by Mr Huiber himself.

…Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras and bison are included in the ark’s interior.

…He began building in May 2005, after he dreamed of the Netherlands being flooded.

“In February 1992, I had a dream that Holland will become flooded. The next day, I found a book about Noah’s Ark in the local bookshop, and since then, my dream has been to build the ark,” he said.

Here are some pictures from the email I received, I found many of the same pictures online….
