The Bailout: Leaving A Strong America for Our Children
By Julie | October 1, 2008
I sometimes let my sons watch a show called “Super Why” on PBS Kids. It’s a good reminder for them of the alphabet, and they really like the stories. Every show a character looks out of the screen, supposedly to his audience and says, “Say your name.” My oldest son, who is 5, answers, “D—.” After a few times of not participating, my 2 year old decided to join in, by saying, “D—.” So D— told him, “You’re not D—, I am. Your name is I—.” But I— just says, “D—.”
This has been happening since this spring. Whenever we ask I— his name he says, “D—.” We correct him. D— corrects him. But he won’t answer correctly.
A couple weeks ago we joined a homeschool co-op. The co-op has four classes for different age levels. Our sons are in different classes. I go back and forth in all the rooms to help out. Most of the time I’m not with my kids and they are not together. Last week I happened to be near D—’s room when his teacher asked his name, he answered “D—.” She sounded confused and asked again, “What’s your name?” Again he said, “D—.” She asked if he was sure. He said he was. Then she asked, “Is your brother’s name D— too?” Before he could answer, the teacher spotted me and asked, “Are both of your kids named D—?” I said, “No, this is D—, his brother is I—.” Looking even more confused she said, “Well, the boy in the preschool room is telling everyone his name is D—.” I burst out laughing, explained “Super Why” and how I— thinks the answer to the question, “What’s your name”, is D—. I had to find and explain to all the teachers who had been in the preschool room that I— is I—, and not D—.
I love that story, because it shows how innocent kids are. And they should be. Like all parents, I hope my kids have a happy childhood. I hope they get to remain innocent for a long time. I hope they grow up with tons of opportunities to pursue and obtain their dreams. I hope they become moral, God-fearing and loving adults, who reach out to help their fellow man. I hope they are respected. I hope this country is still strong enough to support them in it all.
As the Senate prepares to vote on the latest revision of the bailout package I can’t help but think about the generation of my kids, and how this bill may affect their future. I have talked to many people who say we have to do it, or we’ll put the country in a depression. I’ve heard others say it’s foolish to do it… after all, why should we bail out these banks for bad business practices. I can’t help but feel a little in agreement with both sides. For the sake of our family I want what will leave our country with a strong future. But, yes, we shouldn’t just bail out irresponsible actions and reward them with money. Sometimes companies, even industries, fail. I don’t believe it’s the government’s responsibility to jump in and save them. But regardless, what is best for the well being of this country? What will make us stronger in the long run? Will a depression now hurt us for a while but in the long run be better then saddling our kids’ generation, and their kids’ generations with a mound of debt they never had anything to do with? Or will the economy bounce back if the bailout is passed and leave a stronger America for the next generation to raise happy innocent kids?
There is only one source who knows the future, who knows the best solution for this country: God. Please pray for our elected officials who are about to vote on a bill that will affect every American, including the futures of our children. Pray God will lead them, and the right decision will be made.
