2008 Political Race: Obama and McCain Announce Vice Presidential Running Mates

By Julie | September 1, 2008

JulieThese past couple weeks have been a busy time in the 2008 run for president. Obama named an experienced white male congressman, Biden, as his vice presidential running mate. The Democratic convention took place over several days last week. Followed by McCain naming Alaska’s governor and mother of five, Palin, as his vice presidential running mate. Now the media is gearing up to cover the Republican convention taking place this week. Wow.

I am not a very political person, but I do find each candidate’s vice presidential picks interesting. Obama is a very well spoken man. He has gained supporters because of his ideas, as well as the fame of possibly being our first black president. His opponents criticize him for a lack of experience. Who does Obama choose for his running mate? Long time senator Joe Biden. Biden definitely takes some of the “lack of experience” pressure off of Obama. But, as a white man, he doesn’t add anything spectacular for Obama’s minority status. I don’t know a lot about Biden. I have heard some say they have a lot of respect for his proven track record, and him as a person. However, many Christians are upset Obama chose a running mate who is thought to be very pro-abortion. Obama experiences some controversy trying to prove to Christians he’s a Christian. So his choice of running mate may have alienated him from Christian votes. Only time will tell if it even matters.

As surprising as I found Obama’s choice of running mate, I found McCain’s even more bizarre. Sarah Palin came on my TV as I listened to the announcement and I told Marc McCain was genius to choose her. I didn’t know a thing about her, except that she is a woman, which helps McCain even out the minority status Obama had. She is very attractive, and let’s face it, Obama definitely beat McCain there. In a weird ironic twist Obama has chided McCain choosing Palin because of her lack of experience in foreign affairs. Surely even Obama knows he can’t cut her down much on experience, or the fingers will be pointing right back at him, kind of like what happened this entire election. So McCain chooses Palin. He knew people would pay attention to this pretty governor, and him for bringing another woman to the election. He also knew Obama and his supporters can’t say much about her lack of experience.

Again, I am not an overly political person. In fact, I’m looking forward to this election being over so we don’t have to hear about it anymore. But this week I actually enjoyed hearing the news, and the surprising turn of events. I do not want to tell anyone how to vote, the issues that are most important, or the better candidate. I do not want to sway anyone’s opinion.

I do hope we all take the time to pray over this election. Pray that God will rise up the best person for the job, and put him in office. I hope we all take the time to research the candidates and the issues that will appear on the ballot so no matter how we vote, we at least vote informed. I pray, through this election, God will bless this America.
