Web Links - Another Cop-out Post for Monday
By Marc | August 25, 2008
Today, I really can’t think of anything to write about. I’ve got a few small ideas, but nothing more than a few sentences in each. So, I’m just going to give you some of the web places I go to often and sites of interest, not counting the free games sites I already did a while back.
This list is by no means complete it’s not here to promote any one person over another (except for my shameless plugs), but they’re just the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
- GameTrailers - This site is pretty awesome. You can find videos of video game reviews, gameplay samples, creator interviews, reviews, retrospectives, site-hosted and affiliate shows, and of course trailers.
- Homestar Runner - Lots of funny funny flash animation. One of the reasons I really like it, besides the funny, is the absence of foul language and risque subject matter. It proves you can be successful and popular without having to resort to the least common denominator.
- SermonAudio.com - Audio and video of sermons, from all over the place, of just about any topic you can think of, from just about any denomination.
- Findadeath.com - Satisfy your morbid curiosity about the lives and deaths of your favorite deceased celebrities!
- Dial B for Blog - This site has a lot of neat information about classic comics and their creators. The creator is a bit much to handle at times, but he’s intelligent and creative. The site is very entertaining and full of cool stuff.
- The Bald Monkey -
- A Holiday Shot of Wild Turkey - Not necessarily a site itself, but a really fun short story. I think it may just have all of the white trash stereotypes in one place.
- Getty Images - Since I don’t always have a professional model or a mirror at my disposal when I draw, sometimes I need an idea of what hands look like in just the right activity. Or, I have a pose in my head I want to draw but can’t get it to come out on paper. Getty Images has thousands and thousands of photos on their site if you need drawing inspiration.
- HOLY COW! Christian Comics - A really neat collection of short comic stories (usually around 2 or 3 pages) by artist Dean Rankine. He’s really good at taking Biblical stories and concepts and placing them in modern life.
- Cockeyed - Tons of stuff here. Homebrew science experiments, investigative journalism, pranks, How Much is Inside (probably their most popular feature), and lots and lots of other things to read.
- The Picture of Everything - probably not a picture of EVERYTHING, but there is quite a lot. A really time-intensive project, not only to create, but just to look at.
- Hideous Cornhusker Crap - Do you really need an explanation?
- benheck.com - Benjamin Heckendorn creates miniaturized versions of game consoles in his spare time. He also makes movies as well as having other interests.
- Lileks - A collection of stuff from the past, both strange and memorable, like the Gallery of Regrettable Food.
- The Sneeze - A blog, mainly, but very funny. He has a popular section called Steve, Don’t Eat It!
- Identifont - an online tool that helps you to figure out what a specific font is, just in case you need to match something. It comes in really handy in my job.
- Project Gutenberg - Read thousands of free classic books online.
- Internet Archive - Lots of media. Books, movies, audio, and web archives. My personal favorite is the Prelinger Archives, which has a huge selection of old industrial and hygeine films.
- Penny Arcade - One of the most popular webcomics. I never miss it.
- The Bald Monkey - Gotta plug him.
- Stover Chiropractic - Another shameless plug. If you live in or near Lincoln, check him out. Not only a great doctor, but an awfully neat man.
Then these are sites that just have a wide variety of funny (if not always family-friendly) stuff to read:
