Rick Warren from Saddleback Church Interviews Obama and McCain

By Julie | August 22, 2008

JulieLast week, Rick Warren, the pastor of Saddleback church and author of the of best-selling book The Purpose Driven Life, hosted a forum where he sat down with Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama and asked them questions. He asked the traditional questions expected from the Christian community, like, where do you stand on abortion and gay marriage. But he also asked more unusual questions; these were the ones I found interesting. If you’d like to see the whole interview, go to www.GodTube.com/SaddlebackForum!

This forum has received a lot of criticism from people saying things like, How dare the Christians host such an event! This isn’t a Christian Nation, it’s not in the constitution that a president be a Christian. Personally, I liked the idea of each candidate being asked the same questions, and both coming up with such different answers, without a debate where they often end up insulting each other. I don’t care if this event was hosted by a Christian, an atheist, a Muslim, or some athlete. I liked the format of the event. For the first time in a while I actually found both Obama and McCain to be insightful and interesting. They weren’t mudslinging. It was just two men answering a few questions, kind of like life.

I know at this point a lot of people are terribly opposed to one candidate, almost to the point of hate, while totally supporting another. And that’s fine. I’m not trying to advocate one candidate over another. I don’t think I have any right to tell someone who they should or should not vote for. But I do think we should all take a little time before we vote to determine which candidate we agree with more. Let’s face it, sometimes we’re not voting for someone we really like, but trying to determine who we dislike more. But still, voting informed is a much better option then voting clueless. Most importantly, I hope we all take the time to pray over this election, the candidates, and the voting process.

Below are a few videos I found interesting from the Saddleback forum. The first one is Obama’s, and the next is McCain’s answer to the question: What is the most gut-wrenching decision you’ve ever had to make?

The next two videos are responses to the question, What is your stance on merit-based pay for teachers? The first video is Obama’s; the next is McCain’s.

And again, please remember to pray for this country and our election process!
