Ted.com: David Gallo Shows Footage of Amazing Sea Creatures

By Julie | July 30, 2008

JulieYesterday a friend of mine sent me one of the most amazing videos I have ever seen. It was on a site called Ted.com. I’d never heard of the site, or organization before. So I headed to their About TED page to see what they are all about. Here’s a little info from there:

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from those three worlds. Since then its scope has become ever broader.

The annual conference now brings together the world’s most fascinating thinkers and doers, who are challenged to give the talk of their lives (in 18 minutes).

This site makes the best talks and performances from TED available to the public, for free. More than 200 talks from our archive are now available, with more added each week. These videos are released under a Creative Commons license, so they can be freely shared and reposted.

I went to their list of speakers, it consists of 240 speakers, but you have to scroll through 20 pages to see them all. Some I’m not familiar with. But they list are a few pretty famous faces: Bono, Bill Clinton, Richard Dawkins, Jane Goodall, and Billy Graham to name a few. All speakers have established themselves as leaders in their field. The few videos I’ve watched have been amazing. A great look at this world from angles I don’t normally see. They make me wish I had an entire day to just sit here a watch. Unfortunately I have kids to take care of, and a computer that’s not working well for videos. But if you’re bored and want to kill time, I’m sure you’d find something of interest here.

The video I want to post is of David Gallo. The site says this is why you should listen to him:

A pioneer in ocean exploration, David Gallo is an enthusiastic ambassador between the sea and those of us on dry land. David Gallo works to push the bounds of oceanic discovery. Active in undersea exploration (sometimes in partnership with legendary Titanic-hunter Robert Ballard), he was one of the first oceanographers to use a combination of manned submersibles and robots to map the ocean world with unprecedented clarity and detail.

He was a co-expedition leader during an exploration of the RMS Titanic and the German battleship Bismarck, using Russian Mir subs. On behalf of the Woods Hole labs, he appears around the country speaking on ocean and water issues, and leading tours of the deep-ocean submersible Alvin.

This video shows some of the most amazing underwater footage I’ve ever seen. In the presentation Mr. Gallo says when you go into deep water you go through darkness for two hours. When they got deeper, underwater lakes, and mountains were discovered, not to mention never before seen ocean life. You can see it now, here…
