Will the Real (not fake) Presidential Candidate Please Stand Up? (or How do you feel about Christians?)
By Marc | July 11, 2008
Have you ever seen She’s Having a Baby? One of the parts that always cracks us up is during Kevin Bacon’s job interview:
“How do you feel about slave wages?”
“Slave wages are okay!”
“How do you feel about alcoholics?”
“Um, I…like…alcoholics?”
Can I get a show of hands: How many of you are sick of the whole campaigning thing?
I’m sick of hearing about it for one thing. I mean I’d like to know who’s ahead, but I think it ends there until the debates. Every single day, every single news outlet has some stupid piece on how the campaigning is going.
On PBS, there is a BBC World News program. They have lots of presidential election coverage every day. Do you know what I’m saying? THE B-B-C! The British have far more coverage of our own election process than we care to know about their whole government. Are we really that important? Or is it that they’re freaked out that whatever moron we elect will drag them yet again into some stupid crusade? And our “election” process is usually one of the top stories.
I also can’t stand the photo op time. Until the debates, it’s just a lot of PR crap.
It’s like actors going on talk shows. They can try to pretend that they just wanted to chat for a while, but we know why they’re there. They signed contracts and agreed to plug whatever they’re told to. It’s basically just free advertising.
Politicians are no different. They will also appear on talk shows. But also at hospitals, shelters, facilities for inner city troubled minority youth (I think this description covers a broad enough range), supermarket openings, and anywhere else they can get some free advertising. I don’t think they want to be there. I think their careers and egos want them to be there.
Something else? The wishy-washy attitudes.
Because his former pastor said something really radical, Obama had to distance himself. Since McCain’s former pastor said something politically incorrect, he had to also distance himself.
Obama, one minute say you’re a committed Christian; the next, bash Christians who aren’t as liberal as thou. I know that there are different denominations of Christianity, but shouldn’t we still encourage each other? He said that the “Christian Right” is trying to cause division. Wasn’t he trying to cause division by trying to slander one brother to another’s face?
During the 2000 election, McCain called Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson “agents of intolerance”. Maybe that didn’t work out to well for him. In 2006, with that whole President bug buzzing in his ear, he gave the commencement speech at Falwell’s Liberty University. Shucks, Johnny, that was mighty fine of you.
Also, John, could you schmooze with the evangelicals? Maybe get some pictures with them? Talk ‘em up. Say you prefer a Christian president. Oh, but wait! Don’t forget to distance yourself if you don’t look good in the public eye.
I don’t know a whole lot about their stances on other issues. Right now it doesn’t even matter. They’re politicians. They’ll say ANYTHING to get themselves elected. But when you distance yourself from a group or buddy up to a group just to get a vote, what happens after you’re in? Some people are shallow enough to forget the past, while others are smart enough not to let a slur go by without at least an apology.
I know we’re supposed to forgive someone when they harm us, but if there’s no real search for forgiveness and it’s all just a mask on the true face, how many times until we learn? When we deal with wolves, we’re supposed to be innocent as doves, but also as shrewd as snakes.
“I like Christians. Christians aren’t popular? I don’t like some Christians.”
Basically, I don’t trust presidential candidates to show their real faces any more than I could trust a scorpion not to sting me. They will say anything and do anything for a stinking vote. On the occasions that you do get real people in politics, they rarely get far.
At least the cat fighting between Barack and Hillary is over.
In 2004, I voted based on who was the least offensive. Who was the lesser of two idiots? Now, I can’t even tell. The poster boys for the Republicans and Democrats are too much alike. If you squint, you might think they’re the same person.
It’s like in Animal Farm, when the pigs and men started partying together and they all looked the same.
Who’s side are you on? Is it a matter of a donkey and an elephant? Or, is choosing a party a total waste of time? Anymore they’re both the same. You’ve still got to vote for someone.
But, vote for who you believe is the right choice. Don’t vote for bugs.
However you choose to vote, please pray for the election process and that the leadership of this country will be placed in qualified hands.
Bonus! Hey, kids! You can check out Obama’s PR page on his Christian beliefs here (it’s mostly there as damage control for the whole Muslim background thing). And McCain’s here…oh…wait, there isn’t one. But he’s got some press clippings that show what a neat swell guy he is around the Christian folk. You can take them how you will.
