Christianity is Child Abuse? Under What Law?

By Julie | July 9, 2008

JulieAtheists have several phrases they use to describe themselves, while cutting down Christians all in one swoop. A few of their biggies are: free-thinkers, rationalists, and of course, tolerant. I have heard them say, or write, in the same sentence they are incredibly tolerant, unlike those terrible Christians, and they vow to remove the world of Christianity. That’s tolerance? Ridding the world of an entire group of people? Really? I thought tolerance was accepting one another’s differences.

But what cracks me up about these “free thinkers” is they all say the same things. I don’t get it; I thought thinking freely would yield unique thoughts. It seems, every time I read an atheist rant, it says the same thing as every other rant. Where is the free thinking?

I recently came across this gem. You’ll probably recognize it; many other free thinking, tolerant rationalists have said the exact same thing:

Christianity is a cult

The primary reason the Christian religious cult thrives in the United States is because its members abuse their children. Brainwashing the very young to believe what an older person not so indoctrinated would dismiss as foolish is very effective in creating life-long adherents to any cult-like organization. The fact that such “early intervention” is so widespread and practically required of Christian parents says a lot about them and their cult. Mainly, it says that Christianity cannot stand on its own as a religion without such tactics! If Christian parents allowed their children to grow up without such abuse, they know many would reject their archaic beliefs.

If they have the so-called “truth,” why don’t they tell their children to seek it on their own? Why do they fear their children will not discover it? The answer is, …because they wouldn’t!

Christianity is not based upon truth. It is based upon superstition, ignorance and silly ancient fables. Its founder, Jesus Christ, is clearly a mythical, manufactured martyr whose existence, like all mythical characters, cannot be verified historically.

Not only is this regurgitated argument given over and over again by atheists, it’s not very accurate. If children always grow up to be what their parents want, we wouldn’t have the problems we have with teenagers rebelling. My husband was an atheist the majority of his adult life; three years ago he became a Christian. It was not due to brainwashing by his parents, he honestly came to believe in, and felt God in his life. I know people who were raised Christian and became atheists as adults. Other adults become Christian after never having heard the gospel as children.

I’ve heard arguments that if people were never exposed to the stories about Jesus, everyone would’ve ended up atheist. Then they spout such idyllic crap as the world would be all peace and sunshine. Yeah, people do so well at getting along on our own, huh? I know of school shootings, house break-ins, wars, even simple arguments, that had nothing to do with religion. It’s not peace people tend to be striving for, even if religion is taken out of the picture. I have, on the other hand, been involved in some situations that were pretty ugly; people were screaming, tensions were high. Then someone prayed, and the situation calmed down, a peace entered the room. It’s when you experience something like that that God, and prayer, seems pretty obvious.

In my experience, Christian parents are not cramming their religion down their kids’ throats. I’m sure there are cases where this happens. But most of the Christians I know are just living out their faith. They let their kids see them read the Bible and pray. They say grace. They mention God as they live their lives, because that is a natural thing for a Christian to do. These are rituals, like cooking dinner, washing dishes, or doing laundry. It’s certainly never been considered child abuse to make sure he has clean clothes to wear. Why is it suddenly sinister to talk about our beliefs? Don’t atheists tell their child they do not believe in God? Every home will have some spiritual beliefs in it that gets carried down to the child. Is that child abuse? I thought child abuse was hitting a child. I was also under the impression that the first amendment gives freedom of religion; even our constitution allows religion in our homes. Where is the crime Christians are supposedly committing?

If they want children to seek out truth on their own without any input from the parents, then why not let them play with alcohol, rat poison, explosives, and such and see if they learn right and wrong on their own. Why don’t we just let them give in to anything that they “feel” they want to do. When they get abducted, molested, maimed, and/or dead, we can just chalk it all up to a learning experience. God forbid parents should have any say in the moral and cautionary upbringing of their own children.

In the end, no matter what we do, the child grows up and decides for him or herself whether they believe or not, with God’s assistance. Parents can be models of their beliefs, but the children still decide for themselves.
