Nacho Typical Talent Show
By Marc | May 20, 2008
This last Sunday morning, for services we went to the same church we were at the week before, Faith Bible Church. I think we’ll try out going to the same church at least twice before making a judgment because they may have had a bad day (or a particularly good day) on our first visit. We like it, but when the buffet opens up, you have to try everything.
But on Sunday night, we found ourselves back at our friends’ church, Heartlands, for their Nacho Typical Talent Show. The show is a benefit to raise money to send their youth group on an annual mission trip to Mexico.
What a lot of fun! A nice yummy dinner of (you guessed it) nachos and cool drinks started everyone off.
Then the show started. There was quite a variety of performances. Singing, dancing, playing instruments, juggling, telling jokes, a clown act, drama, and even a lip synch act!
It’s hard to tell who I thought was best, but I’ll give a rundown of a just a few of them:
- The elders of the church dressed up like mountain men with long beards, as “The Soggy Bottom Boys”, lip synching “Man of Constant Sorrow”.
- A father-daughter singing/piano performance.
- A troupe of clowns.
- A complex eight-person dance number.
- Two guys dressed head-to-toe as boxy robots doing a dance routine to “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” by Daft Punk based (I guess) on this one. Their robot suits were black with white words. (Julie and I had never even heard of this routine before, but I guess it’s quite popular (with variations), as is the hand version.)
- Juggling!
There were far too many to give a complete rundown here, but everyone was great.
Between the acts, desserts were auctioned off. The bidding wars were pretty tense on everything, except for the bachelor cake (a bunch of Twinkies, still in their wrappers, on a plate) which went for $27 (the bid was 25, but the final 2 dollars had to be squeezed out). The highest bid on an item was for $270. (Julie and I weren’t present for that, so I’m fuzzy on more details.)
Overall, the evening was very enjoyable and I’m pretty sure their goal was met.
There was loud music, loud screaming, kids running and playing, and lots of talking. Some people think Christians are stuffy and don’t know how to have fun. But, minus the alcohol, this event seemed like something non-Christians would do. And everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I know we did.
