Nancy Pelosi Making up Bible Verses

By Julie | May 2, 2008

JulieOh dear. I am still just so stunned by the outright stupidity in the article I came across yesterday, I almost don’t want to show you. Except I find it so darn funny, I can’t resist. Apparently, Nancy Pelosi has been quoting the Bible. That in itself sounds pretty funny, because I’ve never gotten the feeling she has any use for it.

Taken from part Earth Day speech, found here:

“The Bible tells us in the Old Testament, ‘To minister to the needs of God’s creation is an act of worship. To ignore those needs is to dishonor the God who made us.’ On this Earth Day, and every day, let us honor the earth and our future generations with a commitment to fight climate change.”

Apparently it’s not the first time she’s quoted the verse as this blog states:

She has used it in official statements on global warming, the budget, Martin Luther King Day, Christmas, and why she’s a Democrat.

So, where does the verse come from? Well, you know, the Bible. To narrow it down further, Pelosi mentioned the book of Isaiah. Nope, it’s not in there. In fact, the verse doesn’t exist in the Bible, not Isaiah, or the Old Testament, as she said on Earth Day, and not in the New Testament either.

I find it very funny she said a verse like that could be attributed to Isaiah, this shows even more ignorance. Much of the book of Isaiah is prophecy that Jesus would later fulfill. It also has some doom and gloom about what God planned for nations who had turned against him. Some of it is kind of scary. Some of it is beautiful. And the fact it was written hundreds of years before Jesus’ life, but he fulfills very specific details written in it, is proof of how big God is. However, it’s not a ‘stewards of the earth’ type book.

I don’t get it. Doesn’t she have people writing her speeches? Why didn’t it cross their minds to verify if her favorite verse was actually a verse? Shouldn’t it have occurred to someone the Bible is composed of little things called books, chapters, and verses. These sited to let people know where a passage is located, thus, making it valid. I know politicians are known for lying, and have often misquoted the Bible. But making up something you wish were in there is just plain dumb. Many people do know what the Bible says, even if Pelosi doesn’t. With a concordance, or Internet bible search, like biblegateway.com or ibs.org, it has never been easier to find, or verify scripture.

But, here’s what I really don’t get about politicians. They scream for a separation of church and state. But when they want to look authentic, or pander to a Christian side, while hanging onto another, they quote the Bible. All too often inaccurately. If they don’t want it in their lives, and are fighting to keep it out of the public square, why don’t they leave it out of their speeches as well? Honestly, Pelosi would look a lot more intelligent now if she hadn’t even tried. I’m sure some environmentalist, new age mantra would have served her purposes, and made a lot of people, including Al Gore, happy.
