I Love the Newsboys!
By Julie | April 30, 2008
Missed opportunity #1: A few years ago Marc and I headed to Estes Park, Colorado for “Music in the Rockies” Marc had only been a Christian for a month or two. We took our then two-year-old son with us. Our mission: to see the Newsboys in concert. I had been a fan of them for over a decade. They helped Marc realize just because something is Christian doesn’t mean it’s boring and sucks. We actually believed our two-year-old was mature enough to sit through a concert, and he would enjoy the experience. We’ve had a lot of stupid moments as parents, but this has to be at the top of the list. If you are considering making our mistake, can I suggest three little words for you: Find a sitter. We stood in line for an hour, and that left us wrapped half way around the building. My son had never seen the mountains before, he didn’t want to stand there, he wanted to play! We stayed at the concert for about three songs, an opening act. During this time my son kicked against us when we held him so he could get down. He jumped on the chairs, kicked the chairs, kicked us, and threw himself on the floor to scream when we told him to stop. Did I mention he’d already spent four hours cooped up in a car at this point, and I was having morning sickness because I was pregnant with our second child? We left. We never saw the Newsboys, not a glimpse. We didn’t hear a note of their music.
Missed opportunity #2: The following weekend the Newsboys were booked for Nebraska’s Godstock. A location only a few hours from our house, and close enough to my Mom and sister to provide a sitter if we had gone. But, we had just wasted over $100 in tickets, not to mention money for hotels, eating out, and gas. My morning sickness was worse, and my son was still recovering from our “vacation”. We didn’t go.
Missed opportunity #3: Less then a month after going to Colorado and failing to see the Newsboys, they played our State Fair, for free! On my Birthday! We were close enough to get a sitter! But! I couldn’t go. I had missed too much work when I went to Colorado to see them. I couldn’t take any more time off. I worked nights. Their concert was at night. We missed them again!
Missed opportunity #4: Last year the Newsboys were back in town for a concert. It seemed too good to be true! They were back! But, the concert was the day after my son’s 1st birthday, and the day of my nephew’s birthday. We were up to our elbows in cake, frosting, cleaning, and relatives. I couldn’t leave my son’s birthday festivities, even for the Newsboys. Some of our friends did go though; they bought me a t-shirt.
Why do I want to see the Newsboys? Because, you never know what you’re going to get with them. One second their music is beautiful and serious. The next second so outrageous they make you laugh. Then, they are outright corny. Check our some of their lyrics:
I consider all that your hands have made
Every newborn’s eyes, every new sunrise
No power can tame your presence
No light can match your radiance
Mom & Dad,
I’m fair. How’s life? Lent the money you sent
me to the clown with the knife. My career as an
acrobat hasn’t begun, but I’m busy giving blood
and shoveling elephant dung.
Send money.
(And here’s the chorus from the same song, “Reality”…)
In reality
That comes from above
God is calling
There’s no bigger love
It’s his reality that welcomes us back
Trust and obey
There is no other way
(from “In the Belly of a Whale”)
I’m one of the dishes here,
In the belly of the whale.
They say I’m delicious here,
In the belly of the whale.
Lord, please make him chuck it all.
Here’s a clip from one of their concerts. Someday, I hope I’m there…
