Review: Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy

By Marc | April 4, 2008

MarcLast weekend, when the boys and I went to Super Target for a little shopping excursion to get flowers and spend my birthday money, I wanted to get a new videogame.

I don’t get the chance to play games much anymore, but when I do, I really get into it. So I couldn’t just get any game. It had to be something to hold my interest, have tons to do, and something I feel comfortable having around the kids.

I also don’t have a lot of spending cash, so I made the decision a few years ago never to buy the latest thing. For systems, I will wait until they are at least a few years old and fairly inexpensive or used. This helps not only to save money, but also to steer clear of the always buggy launch titles. As far as games, I first check the “Greatest Hits” or “Player’s Choice” lines and then clearance. I’m not going to get something for myself for over $20. Call me cheap, but it feels good to save money.

That said, I was perusing the clearance and value-priced games at Super Target and came across a game that spoke to me: Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy. I had gotten it for my brother for Christmas on his Playstation 2, but this was for the Gamecube, so I didn’t have to lug out my old 50 pound PS2 every time I wanted to play it. Our ‘Cube is always set up. And it was ten bucks on clearance. TEN BUCKS ON CLEARANCE!! Joy of Joys!

This game is a ton of fun. It’s got loads of unlockable characters, extras, secrets, and replay value, and can be played by 1 or 2 people. To get a perfect 100%, it’s literally impossible to do it on your first run. You HAVE to go back to every level with different characters that have different abilities. You can even import your characters from the first game from your memory card. It’s also Lego and Star Wars. Do I even need to explain more?

The only complaints I have so far have been with the use of the lightsaber. It’s frustrating to use at times because even standing right up to an enemy, it seems like occasionally you can’t even hit your target.

Now they have both Lego Star Wars games as one complete game for the newer systems, but for those cheap…I mean frugal players out there, this game (even at $20) is well worth the investment. It’s also rated E 10+, so its fairly descent for the not-so-younger kids.

If you’d like a more in-depth review, check it out on Gametrailers.com. Here are a few videos of the gameplay:
