Oh, Hillary Clinton, the Cameras WERE Rolling

By Julie | March 26, 2008

JulieYesterday Marc wrote about the honesty of new governor of New York, David Paterson. He praised him for openly admitting past affairs his marriage had suffered on the part of both himself, and his wife. Later Mr. Paterson admitted he also used drugs when he was a kid. At the end of his post Marc mentioned a line we use often in our house, “I don’t need our leaders to be perfect, but I do need them to be honest.”

What strange timing, because today I watched a clip of Hillary Clinton. In the clip, that actually occurred last week, she explains about her trip to Bosnia in 1996. In her telling of the story, when she stepped out onto the tarmac her group was met with gunfire. She has a slight chuckle in her voice as she explains they “ran with their heads down to get into vehicles.”

Oh, Hillary, the cameras were rolling as you stepped down off that plane in 1996. What did they show? No gunfire. No running for cars in fear for your lives. No, the video from the 1996 Bosnia trip showed Hillary and Chelsea waving to and shaking hands with the locals, in a calm and peaceful fashion.

As she finished her story she said assuredly, “We basically were told to run to our cars. Now, that is what happened.” But as she said it; she knew that was absolutely nothing like what happened.

This week Clinton admits she “misspoke.” I’m sorry, when I misspeak, I mess a few small details, like the time, or what I was wearing. Hillary stood in front of the press and went on and on about actual gunfire she had landed herself in. Gunfire! Wouldn’t we have heard about it then if it was true?

When I carry on and on about something that didn’t happen there are only two possibilities:

1. I flat our lied. In this case, I know I will have to make amends for the lie, and give apologies.

2. I’m writing a story; if that happens it would be fiction. In this case, if anyone reads said story I will call it fiction.

Well, we certainly aren’t getting apologies. Just a continuation of the insults Obama and Hillary have already been throwing at each other.

I don’t understand what her point of lying was; maybe she wanted to look like a courageous Super Woman, to convince us she’s the right person for the job. But, for every job interview held, the employer expects to get what the person claims during the interview. Clinton is basically applying for a job and we are the interviewers. Unfortunately this isn’t the first, and I doubt it will be the last, blatant lie the American people have been told by a presidential candidate, or the actual president. It is frustrating though. How are we supposed to choose the best person for the job when we are fed lies by the very people who are running? Like I said, I don’t expect a leader to be perfect, but darn it, I do want them to be honest.

What’s next for Hillary? Is she going to claim she invented the Internet? Sorry, Mrs. Clinton, making a documentary on global warming to turn your career around has already been done. (And most people weren’t as smitten by it as Sheryl Crow.) You’ll have to come up with a new strategy to bail yourself out of this one.

Maybe you’ll get lucky and find something in Barack’s closet.
