Three Cheers for New York Governor Paterson!

By Marc | March 25, 2008

MarcThere’s something about sin that brings with it shame. Not only shame, but also a deep desire to keep it secret. So secret that a person can go to great lengths to bury it and even come up with excuses to justify their actions to anyone who confronts them about it, even themselves.

I have things I have done that I’m not exactly proud of, some that I’ve forgotten and some that would eat away at me if I didn’t search forgiveness and redemption.

Sin is a tough thing to deal with; it’s almost like stepping in cow dung. If you don’t deal with it soon, it’ll get more and more difficult to get off. Even if your shoes no longer stink, you’ll still know, and it will stick with you.

So, last week when I read the story about New York’s new governor, David Paterson, and his wife both admitted to having affairs in the past, I thought that was the most awesome thing possible. After his predecessor’s knee-deep involvement in prostitution, coming clean about sin is the best thing for both his state and his soul.

Sure, the couple had worked past it in their marriage, they could have just kept it to themselves and continue to deal with it as a couple. I’m glad they have dealt with it and made their marriage stronger as a result. But since he is a political figure and they are both in the public spotlight, that stuff has to be made known.

Another thing clearing the air does is giving the people around them someone to relate to. It helps the public have trust in the office of the governor. I don’t require my leaders and role models to be perfect, but I do want them to be honest.

And just yesterday, Governor Paterson brought another skeleton out of his closet by admitting to drug use in his youth. Good on ya, shipmate!

I know a lot of this could be political damage control, but it’s the right thing to do anyway. Exposing sin to the light destroys the sin and makes the light that much brighter.

If there’s anything worse, I’d hate to find out. Part of me wonders when politicians start admitting stuff. Are they clearing the air, or only admitting the stuff we’d believe? I really hope it’s the former.
