Resurrection Sunday and VeggieTales
By Julie | March 24, 2008
Recently I read, in my K-Love Devotional, something I’ve never considered about the cross. Technically, I wear a weapon around my neck every day. The cross, in Jesus’ time, was used for torture and murder: nails were driven through hands and feet to affix a person for the sole purpose of a slow, painful death. (The exact opposite of what your average person wishes for themselves.) Yet, for almost 2000 years the cross has become a symbol of hope, and the ultimate form of love.
Why? We certainly don’t wear guns on our necklaces and bracelets, or prominently hang a beautiful painting of a bloody knife. We don’t look at a bomb in remembrance of any good thing. Rarely does death bring us anything but sadness, grief, and mourning. We haven’t gotten 2000 years of love and hope from any other unjustified murder.
But with Jesus, as we celebrated yesterday on Easter, we also got his resurrection, and the promise of life everlasting. No other event has ever offered humanity so much. I think it’s said best in a line from the Veggie Tales An Easter Carol: “He died for us to give us life, but to give us hope he rose.”
Last night we were reading to our sons, and trying to explain Easter. My 4 year old said, “Jesus died for me, Mommy?”
I said, “Yes, that’s how much he loves you.” Then we talked a little about the resurrection. Even in his young mind, I could see it gave him peace to know, as he said, “Jesus didn’t stay dead.”
So I told him, “No matter what happens in your life, even if you feel all alone, and don’t think anyone loves you. Remember, Jesus always loves you.”
He replied. “But, Mommy, you love me, and Daddy loves me, and all my friends love me too.”
I told him we do, and we always will. But there may be times he doesn’t think so, but he never has to discredit Jesus. Because Jesus loves him even more then Daddy and I love him.
His eyes got big and he said, “Really. He loves me more!” Sometimes I find that amazing too.
I hope you all had a Happy Easter. Before I go, I’d like to share a video with a song featuring the Veggie Tales quote from above.
