Silencing the Christians
By Julie | March 19, 2008
I want to share with you a discovery I came across a couple days ago. Before I do, I feel like I should give a little explanation, and a warning.
SilencingChristians.com is hosting the broadcast for a 13 week series called “Speechless…Silencing the Christians”. The series is airing on INSP (though, I have no idea what this station is). If you are interested, you can go to their website and sign up, then you’ll be reminded, via email, when a new episode is available.
Here’s a tidbit about the series from their website:
Renowned author and commentator Janet Parshall takes you on a journey across the country to meet citizens who have been arrested for speaking out at a public rally, students who are being forced to attend classes that require them to recite verses from the Koran and to stage their own jihad and activists pushing social tolerance to such an extreme that the Bible itself is being labeled “hate speech.”
This program is trying to get the word out on issues our news and the media doesn’t really want to talk about. Since the media is not talking, many Christians are unaware that some of our rights are in jeopardy. That said, I don’t want to sound like ‘Woe to the Christians, the world is out of get us.’ We have incredible freedoms in this country. Every week, my family goes to church peacefully, while people in other countries are tortured and sometimes killed for their attendance. I believe the majority of people in this country are fine with religious freedom, and want to see it continue. But, there are segments who want laws to legislate religion into extinction. Not the majority, I know. But with any sector, if the wrong person gets the wrong power, common rights are lost. That’s why I want to share “Silencing the Christians”. This series tries to expose various lawsuits carried out against people who were exercising their religious freedom. The show also mentions specific legislation that, if passed, could change the face of religious freedom in this country, something we should all be entitled to: Christian, Jew, Muslim, atheist, and every other belief system.
Currently, two episodes are available to view. What I find the most enlightening, and scary, are the stories of what has happened in our schools. In our public education system, God can only be mentioned if Jesus is not, because, one specific religion cannot be taught in the public schools. A valedictorian’s microphone was cut in her commencement speech for daring to mention her faith, her lawsuit is pending. Meanwhile, in one California school, Islam is not only taught, but children are encouraged to memorize verses from the Koran, pray to Allah, dress in Muslim dress, and stage their own “jihad”. What’s the reasoning there? Christianity cannot even be mentioned, but full practice of Islamic faith is encouraged for a grade? And the taxpayers are funding this? Why isn’t the ACLU jumping all over that school?
Now that I’ve given you a synopsis, here’s my warning: I find certain phrasing in the program at times quite condescending, not necessarily to Christians, but for those who aren’t. Sometimes words the host chooses seem a bit harsh to me. But, most of the people she interviewed were more real, and came off quite compassionate, especially the valedictorian, and Brad Ducas, the president for Pacific Justice Institute.
Now for my biggest warning… Anne Coulter. Some people absolutely love her, and cheer on everything she does. Though, I’m sure there are just as many people who have a death wish out on her. Sometimes I find she’s funny, and I almost want to agree. But, next I find myself saying, “No! She didn’t really just say that, did she?” Well, in the second episode there is an interview with Anne Coulter. In this interview Ms. Coulter says something about evil being at work. Then she quickly inserts, “Evil meaning liberals.” Oh, Anne. I know, she has that whole conservatives = good; liberals = bad thing going. But I can’t fall for that. I believe this country has seen some very evil liberals, and very evil conservatives, independents, blacks, whites, Jews, Christians, Muslims, fill in the blank. But, we’ve seen a lot of good people from all of those groups as well.
Watch at your own risk, depending on which side of the love / hate argument you’re on.
