Zager Guitar

By Marc | January 22, 2008

MarcSaturday night (late…okay early Sunday morning) I was working with the TV playing in the background when I heard one of those Time-Life Music infomercials for the “Flower Power” collection. I usually stop whatever I’m doing when these things come on for two very important reasons:

a. I want to see what the people look like who sing the songs I have heard my whole life, and

b. I enjoy watching some celebrity, who forgot his or her dignity pills that day, read off a cue card alongside some actress paid to be excited to be there.

So, anyway, after I cringe at Peter Fonda (from Thomas and the Magic Railroad fame) wearing some sort of Easy Rider-ish costume (tan leather jacket, tinted shades) and notice an American flag motorcycle (same one? Who knows.), I watch and listen to parts of lines of songs.

One of them is “In the Year 2525″ by Zager and Evans.

The first time I had ever heard that song, my stepfather pointed it out when it played on the radio in our family’s packing plant when I was somewhere between 10 and 14 years old. He made a special point to say they were from Nebraska, so I paid closer attention to it. Wow! Someone from our state has a song known by people all over the country!

I felt almost a kinship. I didn’t know either man or the other people who played in the song, and I probably never will, but they and that song hold a special place for me because of the commonality of our geography.

Okay, back to the present.

I immediately wanted to listen to the whole song and find out what they were doing now. First, I went to that great social equalizer, YouTube. I love and hate YouTube. I like being able to watch things I will probably never see again anywhere else (old TV commercials), but you are also subjected to a bunch of garbage. When it comes to videos for this site, I prefer to post official ones from the owners if I can. If I can’t, then I go with some lame copy.

The top result was this:

And it’s posted by Zager Guitar!

After the song, I immediately checked out the site. It is Denny Zager’s guitar business along with his son. I don’t know how to play guitar. I don’t play any instrument. But if I did, I would buy one of these.

I don’t know if you know about them, but I didn’t. He has his own line of acoustic guitars and also Martin guitars. Mr. Zager modifies each of them himself with his patented “EZ-Play” system. He does all sorts of things including filing the frets and lowering the strings to make the guitar easier to play.

The process and the instruments tempt me, but what really impresses me is the guarantee. Check it out. This is someone who really stands behind his work and respects his customers. The site has several hundred testimonials listed.

He also has online video guitar lessons available!

Please pay a visit to a fellow Nebraskan for me.

Note: I tried looking up Rick Evans, but the only information I could find was that he has a show in Lake Tahoe, but no other info.
