A Movie Review: Amazing Grace

By Julie | December 17, 2007

JulieThis will be a short entry, not because I don’t have a lot I want to say, but because I want to write about the movie Amazing Grace, but I don’t want to give it away.

The movie takes place in the 1700’s, in Britain. It follows the true life story of William Wilberforce, a member of parliament who tried for over 15 years to abolish the slave trade in Britain. Meaning, he tried to stop Great Britain from sending ships, packed with slaves out to sea, because of the insanely inhuman conditions aboard.

Wilberforce was a Christian, committed to God. He believed the Bible when it said God created all men equal. To him, the Africans who were being plucked from their homeland and thrown on a ship were his equals. He devoted his life to standing up for them, and stopping the terrible conditions they were facing. The “all men are equal” principals are fairly obvious to us today, but Wilberforce battled strict opponents who saw it as their right to own men (and women and children) as property. His opponents lied about the conditions of the slaves, and claimed the end of the slave trade would hurt Britain financially.

Wilberforce was so committed to the battle that it took over every part of his life, causing deterioration on his health, and an end to some of his friendships. And I don’t want to give any more of the movie away.

Atheists claim Christianity has never contributed anything good to the world. But this movie does an excellent job of showcasing a country’s history. And it points out what can happen when God gets a hold on a person. If it weren’t for God, what would’ve convicted people to decide slavery was wrong? The internal moral code I’ve heard non-believers refer to certainly wasn’t convicting anyone to stop. So, go watch a movie that demonstrates some of the good things Christianity has given to the world.
