Progress Report (a short story)

By Julie | December 3, 2007

Boss:

I did everything you said, and you don’t have to worry anymore. Not only did I stop him dead in his tracks. But I’m sure he won’t make the same mistake again. It will be a long time until he tries to reach out or do something positive in this community again. I did such a number on him that I’d actually feel sorry for him if I could possess such a thing as compassion. He never knew what hit him, I mean that literally. Because he doesn’t believe in you, Boss, we’re able to hit him again and again.

First off I filled his head with lies about how brilliant he is. So, he started off the day thinking he’d never fail, that he was above everyone. You were right; arrogance really puts these people on the wrong path. And if they’re worshiping themselves they certainly aren’t off doing any other kind of worship.

But, I knew his boss was going to decline his proposal. And since I boosted up his arrogance, when the proposal fell threw he was devastated. He thought since his boss didn’t like it no one would. Oh Boss, your plan was brilliant. Now he’s actually thinking he has no talents and no one would ever want to listen to him again. Of course I helped him out with those thoughts, whispering in his ear how worthless he is, that he’s doomed and if he doesn’t just quit trying he’ll fall harder then ever. I worked his mind around to believing he’s never going to do better then where he is right now. And that he’ll even probably fail at that. And that he probably won’t even be able to care for his family. Oh Boss, it was perfect. In less then an hour I’d set him up thinking he was a god to set him up even harder for the fall I knew he’d take.

Then I worked on his wife, reminding her how he didn’t take out the trash when he got home. Then I kept reminding her of all the other things he’s said he’d do but hasn’t. I even told her she deserves to have more in life, and the reason she doesn’t is because he won’t work harder to take care of her. I told her if he doesn’t work harder then the kids will end up in day care and she will be working in some job she hates. She’s planning on ripping him apart when he gets home tonight. I can’t wait to see the results. She’ll make him feel even smaller, and demand he tries harder when he’s afraid to try at all.

I can’t wait to see the trickle down effect this will have on the kids. Soon we’ll be destroying them too. Just think of all the generations within this family you’re going to control. I can hardly wait to ruin their lives.

You’re a genius boss. We’re making them believe less in God. And you were right; if they don’t believe in you then you have so much more power over them. I’m honored to work for such a genius as you.

Proudly yours,

Timmy,
Agent of Lucifer
